Thanks, Clay! I barely know anything about biodiesel, so I'll read up. Other current contenders include the Volvo S60 AWD and the Ford Escape Hybrid 4WD (slightly more expensive), and the Audi A4 AWD. They might be tight for a family of 5, but the Honda Odyssey will remain the primary family car. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Fitz: I love that you are my only consistent commenter. To reward your persistence, here you go:
As a papa of a family of 5 as well, i'll tell you that we drive a 10 year old VW Eurovan because it was less than $10k, seats about a grillion, has auto, gets acceptable gas mileage (not great, about 18 city), and is super safe by virtue of the fact that it's a V6 (hence can outrun problematic turns) and weighs a lot. However, if I were to do it all over again given that we live in a place where AWD would be very useful for weekend trips to the mountains and such, I would have gotten either a used Toyota Sienna AWD *or* one of those Dodge minivans with AWD that they made for a few years. I will tell you, though, that having driven a 30 year old Mercedes 300D sedan with 190k miles and that gets 25 mpg on biodiesel in the city and that I can cram all 3 of my kiddos in the back seat with legit car seats, if I were in your shoes I would scour eBay (as I am now doing) for a 1981-1985 Mercedes 300TD diesel wagon with the 3rd rear facing shoulder-harness seat. You won't get under 70k miles, and you won't get AWD, but you WILL get ability to cart around your entire family in style, auto transmission that will never konk out on you, great gas mileage, great enviro impact (assuming you have access to a carbon-offset purveyor of B99 biodiesel, which is readily availabel in the PacNW but which may be challenging to find where you are), and safety in droves. Plus, easy front and rear light bulb replacements and a killer chrome roof rack. Or, if you want an easier choice, you can get the Volvo AWD crosscountry wagon with optional rear bench seat facing rear, which runs on unleaded, gets ~15mpg in the city, will run you under $15k if it's >8 years old, has auto, is incredibly safe by modern standards and has LATCH seat mounts for kiddo car seats, and can be driven by a male without concern if it's in a suitably dark color.
As for your camera desires, I have no recommendations except to shoot with your iPhone or smartphone and be happy with the incredible resolution shots those things deliver these days and don't spend another $2k on a device that meaningfully replicates what you already carry around in your pocket... and put the $2k towards an environmentally friendly car, amigo. :). All best, Clay

I'm in the market for a car and my constraints have been:
+ Under 70K miles
+ Under $15K
+ AWD
+ Seats my family of 5 (although we have a Honda Odyssey that we'd normally use and I might keep my BMW Z3 that none of my kids can ride in)
+ Auto Transmission
+ Decent gas mileage
+ Safe
I might be willing to relax some of the constraints for a great option. Suggestion?
