Front Page Editorial License

The New York Times’ front page photo editor today managed to say all that they needed to say about the Old Grey Lady’s opinion of Sarah Palin.  If I had to interpret the editor’s silent commentary, it might be something like, “Wow, she really projects the gravitas necessary to serve in this country’s highest office, doesn’t she?”…

Lagunitas Brewing Co. describes our mad, mad times

One of my friends suggested a few years back that when non-locals of the Pacific Northwest arrive in these parts, having been immediately recognized by locals as not-one-of-their-own-but-a-potential-convert, he or she is issued the keys to a Subaru Outback and a cold pint of microbrew. You know, to try out the way “we do” up here in the PacNW, and to ensure we fit in (quietly, of course, and prepared for the rain and mud, natch) so as not to unduly bother anyone else for the first few moments of our experience here in Moist Heaven.

Well, with due respect to the many many many many great local, regional, and pacnw microbrews up here in my adopted home, I must admit that tonight I read one of the best summaries of our current economic (and social) condition on the side of a bottle of

(shudder)

Northern California microbrew.

Specifically, Lagunitas Brewing Co.’s Wilco Tango Foxtrot Ale [subtitle: A Malty, Robust, Jobless Recovery Ale]

Without further ado, here is the wisdom of brewers, which might just trump the wisdom of economists, when the times get tough!  If you don’t want to read this simulacrum, however, splash out the $4.29 at your local specialty beer purveyor and read this little treatise on the side of their “WTF Ale” yourself – I’m sure Lagunitas will thank you for it.

Waves

Life kind of goes in sine waves – the depth of the nadir of ‘rough times’ seems to always be equivalent to the height of the peak of ‘good times’ you recently experienced (or perhaps are soon to experience?).

Light is neither particle nor wave, yet simultaneously somehow both.

The height of the wave face before the barrel curl isn’t how high the wave is, really, since half of it is basically under water, relative to the baseline height of the rest of the ocean. Except at offshore reef breaks like Jaws and Mavericks.

Yep, there it is.
